Abstract:
E-learning, Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), and Content Management Systems are terms that are still being defined. The parameters for what a Content Management System consists of are also unclear, leaving the door open for email clients and social networking sites, such as Facebook to be described as VLEs. Language teachers who are new to E-learning can easily become lost in the rhetoric. What is lacking is a practical look at the current, popular offerings for E-learning that in all probability language teachers will have to use. Using Moodle 2.3 and BlackBoard’s Course Sites, a systematic comparison of the modules in both VLEs was made. Specifically, the depth of the functionality of the modules and the number of available modules were appraised, along with the ease of importing and exporting course content between the two VLEs. The actual content of the presentation and collaboration of the presenters were completed in the virtual environments of both systems since the presenters were physically located in different countries (Korea & Japan).
