Abstract:
The raw materials sector is currently undergoing a radical transformation driven by the twin challenges of digital transformation and the transition toward a decarbonised economy. This evolving landscape, characterised by shorter technology cycles and the human-centric approach of Industry 5.0, demands a new generation of professionals who are not only technically proficient but also resilient and innovation-oriented. This paper explores the strategic integration of entrepreneurial training and digital competencies within mining engineering curricula, with a specific emphasis on the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
While the emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) offers unprecedented opportunities for academic productivity and creativity, it also presents significant risks to academic integrity and intellectual property rights. To navigate these complexities, the paper proposes a shift in the educator’s role—from a primary source of knowledge to a "Learning Facilitator" and "Content Curator"—who ensures that AI tools complement students' critical thinking rather than replacing their efforts.
Through a comprehensive review of academic literature, current educational practices, and global industry trends, this paper identifies key skill gaps and pedagogical challenges faced by mining engineering programs. It also examines the successful case of the MEITIM MSc Master Program, where entrepreneurship and innovation have been effectively integrated into mining-related higher education. The study illustrates how embedding a competency-based framework can align entrepreneurial education with the technological and human-centric pillars of Industry 5.0, including artificial intelligence, human-machine collaboration, sustainability, and social responsibility, and can foster an entrepreneurial mindset. By aligning engineering education with ethical AI principles and the socio-economic pillars of Industry 5.0, higher education institutions can empower students to become proactive agents of change, capable of leading sustainable technological transitions in an increasingly autonomous and connected mining sector.Keywords:
