Abstract:
Digital technologies are becoming an essential part of all areas of human activity. Notions like information society, knowledge society, Industry 4.0 are often mentioned in governmental vision documents as well as in reports published by international organisations (OECD, UNESCO, etc.). Changes can be noted also in education, which is striving to respond to the current requirements and modify not only the content but also methods and forms of education. Consequently, the use of digital technologies in education is no longer perceived as a competitive advantage, but as an essential element that has a positive impact on educational, social and economic processes.

Today’s young generation is growing up surrounded by modern information and communication technologies. Even before they start primary school, children are able to use some features of smartphones, tablets, computers and the Internet, usually for the purpose of own entertainment or communication with others. However, these devices have a much bigger potential that can be used also in the field of formal education and on all levels of the education system.

This paper aims to chart the use of digital technologies in the formal education environment in the Czech Republic, using quantitative and qualitative methods. The specific tools used are questionnaire research and semi-structured interviews.
