Abstract:
This article shows the successful strategies that were used in the different areas of the teaching-learning process at the Polytechnic University of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in order to implement the model of competency-based education and the use of ICT with the aim of improve the self-learning of the students.
This work describes the most important actions that we have done to impulse the learning in Mathematics, Sciences, Programming and Statistics, which are some of the areas of knowledge frequently identified as problematic in the Mexican educational system due to the low rates of approval. This problems show the urgent need to reform the teaching-learning methods in order to reverse the negative tendencies in our Campus.
In the particular case of mathematics, we describe the experience of the implementation of a laboratory of mathematics supported by the symbolic computational software Maple that strengthens the basic concepts and the development of skills oriented to solve problems.
In the case of Sciences, we show a strategy of educational innovation through the use of Lego robots to develop science projects as a complementary activity in class.
In the case of the information technologies area, we present the implementation of a strategy to encourage the programming skills through the use of mobile devices according to the methodology of problem-based learning (PBL).
Finally, in the case of Statistics, we show how the use of the SPSS software and the active roles of the students in the fieldwork of the real world problems result in a great experience for them and they feel that they are involved in the professional aspects of their career.
In this report the detailed strategies and a discussion of the main results are provided.
