Abstract:
The open Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) process promotes the openness of research, which can be made open by producing and utilizing information in a variety of ways. At Laurea University of Applied Sciences (UAS) the applied and participatory RDI is integrated into education, development and innovation activities. One of the key values of Laurea UAS is Openness; in compliance with the principles of open science and research, one of the aims is that the students learn future skills in regard of citizen science and open data. That is achieved for example by participating in collection of longitudinal research data for the society to use.
Openness in education means many different activities in teaching and utilizing materials. We claim that openness promotes new means for collaborative knowledge creation. Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials that are released under an open license. In this presentation we discuss how Open Educational Resources (OER) are to become mainstream at Laurea UAS as we are to evaluate the quantity of open, CC licensed digital studies and feedback provided by students. OER promotes also co-creation as the materials are shared and developed within the community of teachers, students, and partner organizations. At Laurea UAS most of the teaching is done in small teams or pairs which can be regarded as part of Open Educational Practices (OEP). Pedagogies and teaching practices are shared as openly as possible.
Laurea UAS has been intensively involved in the Finnish research community which has jointly created a Declaration for Open Science and Research. The declaration was approved by the National Open Science and Research Steering Group on 10th of December 2019. The declaration provides a common direction for the development of the research community. The joint mission is to promote openness as a fundamental value of science, to strengthen the relevance of research in society and to increase the mobility and impact of research. [1]
The presentation discusses the ways Laurea University of Applied Sciences has promoted collaborative construction of knowledge through Open Educational Resources and Practices. The case study is constructed by analyzing the practical examples of OER and OEP in regard of strategic objectives of Declaration for Open Science and Research.
