Abstract:
This presentation addresses the critical need for strong educational programs within prisons. Specifically the model developed and implemented by Temple University, Philadelphia, PA is described in detail. The overall value of prison-based educational programs Is discussed but the unique characteristics of this educational approach and Widener University’s current role form the core of the presentation. The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program provides traditional college students and currently incarcerated individuals opportunities to study together. For a full semester length course these students from Universities in multiple countries learn about topics spanning many different disciplines. Details of the evolution of my 15 years of teaching stress related psychology courses highlight the general often transformative benefits of this specific educational model. But in particular raise the pressing need for psychoeducational instruction in learning about and increasing understanding of the deep impact of underlying traumas both historical and present that are often shared in our exploration of stress and its complex physiological, psychological and social impact. Through the lens of psychological research students study issues such as common life stressors, as well as childhood trauma, sexual abuse, PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) and discussion of the more recent research area of moral injury (soul wounds). Evidence-based strategies for managing stress are taught and recent research in post-traumatic growth is included. Keywords:
