Abstract:
This paper explores the process of developing a new part-time programme and reviewing an undergraduate programme in Geospatial Surveying. Geospatial Surveying (Geomatics) is defined by Li, Shen and Wang, (2018) as a “multi-disciplinary science and technology that uses systematic approaches to integrate all the means for task-oriented spatio-temporal data acquisition, information extraction, network management, knowledge discovery, and spatial sensing and recognition, as well as intelligent LBSs pertaining to any physical objects and human activities on the earth”.
The aim of the newly redesigned BSc. in Geospatial Surveying is to meet the demands of both the public and private sectors for Geospatial professionals, while simultaneously attracting a higher proportion of students from the school leaving cohort. This paper reports on the exploration of the use of a standardised process for developing new programmes in addition to examining the development of content and an educational model that ensures a unique experience for students whilst meeting the expectations of the employers. The findings can inform others who wish to undertake a similar process in developing a new part-time or full-time honours degree qualification.
The objectives of the project were:
- To increase the number of students enrolling in the discipline of Geospatial Surveying (BSc)
- To develop a new method of delivery that would enable ‘professional’ students to work within the industry while studying for a formal qualification.
- To ensure graduates of the new programme meet the needs of this rapidly expanding field and contribute significantly to the skill-set and knowledge base required across a number of disciplines including the (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) AEC, and data analytics and modelling sectors.
- Ensure that graduates were sufficiently exposed to sustainability with the ambition that every learner will have a passion for sustainability. Keywords:
