MAPPING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE-SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY AND EQUITABLE DIGITAL LITERACIES INTO TEACHER PREPARATION

Abstract:
In this presentation, we will discuss how a teacher education department is transforming its curricula through a curriculum development project that utilizes a double lens framework, incorporating Culturally Responsive and Sustainable Pedagogy (CRSP) and the Computing Integration Teacher Education (CITE).
We will describe the integration of culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogy into the undergraduate program in a Childhood, Bilingual, and Special Education (CBSE) department in New York City. The goal of this curriculum project is to analyze, assess, and redesign the undergraduate Childhood Education program from a culturally responsive and sustaining perspective. We aim to determine how and where each element of culturally responsive teaching can be included, demonstrated, practiced, and assessed throughout the program.
In line with the department's commitment to developing skillful and knowledgeable educators guided by social justice and culturally sustaining pedagogies, we also aim to engage all educators across programs in integrating digital literacies and computational thinking into their teaching practices. Recognizing the importance of digital literacies and computational thinking for students' lives, our goal is to help educators understand how these skills intersect with social justice, equity, literacies, digital citizenship, innovation, economic development, school reform, school transformation, and personal fulfillment and joy.
This presentation will showcase the vision, rationales, curricula, and student work developed by faculty members through this teacher education initiative. We will present details about our data collection and analysis process and discuss how the knowledge gained, and deliverables produced through this process, along with the challenges encountered, may serve as a model for other teacher preparation programs attempting to enhance culturally responsive and sustainable pedagogy and the integration of digital literacies.Keywords:
