Abstract:
Since there arose a need to teach a foreign language in the human society, there also emerged the task of searching for effective ways to achieve this goal. Nowadays, this problem is going global: foreign language teaching issues are prioritized practically in all countries of the world. The acquisition of linguistic-cultural material creates a linguistic-cultural competence, which is understood as an integral system of ideas about the national customs, traditions and realities of the country of the language being studied. This is one of the main goals of teaching a foreign language, since it forms the secondary linguistic personality of a student. Raising the students’ cultural level is an urgent task of foreign language lessons.
The use of such video materials as vlogs at a foreign language lesson provides formation of background knowledge. However, insufficient study of the question makes the research relevant. Careful attention is given to the specifics of teaching a foreign language to secondary school students.
The aim of this article is to prove that the use of video, video blogs in particular, has a positive impact on the formation of linguistic-cultural competence of students; moreover, it enhances the interest of schoolchildren in studying it. Successful solution of the aim required the use of the following scientific research methods: theoretical study and synthesis of scientific and methodological literature as well as Internet resources related to the research topic, descriptive-analytical, forecasting method, generalization, systematization, observation of students’ activities at a foreign language lesson, pedagogical experiment and testing methods.
The practical importance of the study is that the obtained results can be used in teaching English at the secondary school.
The use of videoblogs at a foreign language lesson has significantly expanded the information environment, students' interest in studying culture-oriented linguistics and served as a strong motivational incentive. Memorization of linguistic-cultural vocabulary has improved significantly due to the active involvement of various memory types.
The materials of conducted pedagogical experiment demonstrated practical value and real prospects of formation of linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills of middle school students as well as development of linguistic-cultural competence by using vlogs.
Research perspectives are primarily related to the possibility of compiling a methodical complex for "Spotlight" textbook on the basis of vlogs and exercises, creation of a list of recommended most efficient video blogs. In addition, at the next stage of the research, there is an opportunity of developing the potential of the use of video blogs not only through the prism of linguistic and cultural competence, but also through communicative and linguistic competence. Keywords:
