Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse the origins and antecedents of personality disorders in childhood. We have attempted to describe the course of development and the hierarchical structure of personality disorder antecedents or precipitants. Attempts to apply the categorical perspective of DSM-IV to the description of the personality pathology of children have been controversial. Therefore, in parallel with the developmental perspective, we have taken the dimensional approach of the five-factor model (FFM) of personality for describing personality disorder antecedents. Then, we have taken a developmental, longitudinal and dimensional perspective on personality disorders and we have studied how features or traits of childhood personality turn into pathological trait patterns. The aim of this paper is to identify the genetic and social transmission of personality disorders and prevent risk factors of personality disorders in educational contexts, explaining how some children develop stable forms of psychopathology.
