Abstract:
Fluid communication between the teacher and the pupil demands skills in verbal as well as non-verbal communication. It is important for the teacher to be familiar with non-verbal communication strategies in order to communicate effectively with children. Firstly, the decor of the classroom, the colour of the walls, the origin of the lighting, the existence of natural light, the temperature of the classroom, the height of the chairs and the tables and the quality of the transmission of sound in the classroom are important factors for good communication in the classroom. Secondly, the distribution of classroom space, the location of the desks in the classroom, the distribution of the pupils at the desks and the distance between the pupils and the teacher are also key factors for effective communication Thirdly, the appropriate use of body language by the teacher is one of the most important elements in the non-verbal communication: the teacher must adequately handle the haptics, the chronemics, the kinesics, the proxemics, the olfactics, the paralanguage, the oculesics and physical appearance. The aim of this paper is to train the teacher to use non-verbal language correctly in the classroom, and to successfully overcome resistance to communication on the part of the pupil.
