Abstract:
In an era of rapid technological advancements, this study embarks on an exploration of the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in adult education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) at Open University Malaysia. With ODL emerging as a crucial mode of educational delivery, especially for adult learners, the potential of AI to enhance and revolutionize this domain is of increasing significance. This research focuses on AI’s capacity to personalize learning experiences and facilitate cognitive development in adult learners. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study critically assesses how well AI tools align with adult learning principles, especially regarding their impact on cognitive growth and development. It also examines the application of these AI tools in myINSPIRE, a Moodle-based learning management system, evaluating their effectiveness in delivering culturally sensitive and personalized educational experiences. The findings reveal a notable gap between the technological capabilities of AI tools and the specific educational needs of adult learners in the ASEAN context, particularly at Open University Malaysia, resulting in underutilization. In response, the study underscores the need for the development of ethical policy frameworks and the creation of AI tools that are user-friendly and customized to the unique educational requirements of adult learners. These efforts aim to enhance the functionality of LMS like Moodle, boost learner engagement, and effectively address the distinct cognitive and cultural needs of adult learners in the region.
