GETTING TO KNOW THE CITY THROUGH THE DIDACTICS OF TRANSLATION: A TEACHING PROPOSAL IN GRANADA (SPAIN)

Abstract:
Machine translation burst into the lives of translators last century and is here to stay.
In this way, the evolution of technologies has made it easier for more and more users, companies and professionals to resort to machine translation due to its immediacy. Furthermore, in recent years, a new concept has begun to be discussed: augmented translation, which consists of complementing the translation process with the relevant technologies in each case and thus optimising the translators' performance, guaranteeing the highest quality in the shortest possible time (De Palma, 2017). The basis of this new translational approach is the so-called augmented reality, i.e. an environment in which virtual and non-existent elements are combined with other physical and tangible elements, thus creating a real-time experience through technological devices. In this way, the perception of the real world is complemented by digital layers that are superimposed on reality.
On the other hand, one of the most innovative areas of research in contemporary Translation Studies is the interdisciplinary research on cities and public places as translatable spaces. This is a type of proposal that incorporates historical, urbanistic and sociolinguistic knowledge about the city, as well as the narratives that have been shaping and defining them.
This paper details an innovative teaching initiative aimed at final-year students of the Degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada (Spain). In order to complete the compulsory final project, which is a prerequisite for obtaining the degree, students use augmented translation to linguistically translate not only the texts but also the spaces of their city.
