Abstract:
In the modern world professionals of different realms including teaching are facing new challenges and looking for new innovative ways to pursue their purposes. The practice of using digital technology has become far more instrumental in teaching in the recent time than it has ever been before. Therefore, the usage of video materials has become an integral part of the teaching process as this materials are aimed to enhance such skills as listening and speaking, along with helping students visualise vocabulary items by creating imagery and, thus, build stronger links between the image and the signifier.

The article explores the ways teachers can use such video materials as history documentaries to teach the English language and culture to students who study international journalism. It looks into the characteristics of such documentaries and the criteria according to which they are selected. The authors dwell on particular narrative technics which are used to engage viewers such as stylistic devices, emphatic constructions etc., which can be of great necessity to prospective international journalists.The primary emphasis is placed on the vocabulary used to illuminate historical events and build the image of historical personalities.
