Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed an unprecedented crisis in the field of education, particularly affecting marginalized populations in developing countries. This presentation will share the findings of a study conducted to evaluate the effects of the pandemic on student learning and teacher professional development. By employing a mixed methods approach and utilizing existing data sources such as test scores and attendance records, a case study was conducted in one school in India to comprehensively understand the impact. The results of the study shed light on the disproportionate consequences faced by students, further exacerbating existing disparities and presenting challenges related to the digital divide, disrupted learning, economic impact, mental health, professional development of teachers, and the widening of the gender gap. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the urgent need to address these inequalities and ensure equal access to quality education for all students. It calls for collaborative efforts from governments, international organizations, and the private sector to bridge the digital divide and provide effective solutions for remote learning. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of supporting the mental health and well-being of students and teachers.
