Abstract:
In a rapidly evolving global economy, aligning business academic programs with labor market needs has become a strategic priority for higher education institutions (HEIs). This study explores how institutional quality assurance (QA) mechanisms can enhance collaboration with employers to ensure curriculum relevance and graduate employability. Focusing on two public HEIs - Vilniaus Kolegija/Higher Education Institution in Lithuania and Ilia State University in Georgia - this comparative case study investigates cooperation practices in different socio-economic and educational contexts. The primary aim is to uncover how QA structures facilitate ongoing engagement with the labor market and support curriculum adaptation to changing employer expectations.

A multi-method qualitative approach was adopted, incorporating institutional document analysis, case study and a focus group discussion with local and international employers. Findings indicate that competencies - such as critical thinking, communication, adaptability, and teamwork - are increasingly valued alongside technical knowledge. Employers emphasized the importance of integrating real-world experiences into study programs through internships, interdisciplinary and project-based learning, and participation in curriculum design. Both institutions actively engage alumni as mentors, feedback providers, and partners in job placement and employability initiatives.

Key solutions identified include regular feedback mechanisms, participatory curriculum design, and integrating real-world case studies. Competence development on a program level requires defining curricular units, setting clear learning goals, implementing structured monitoring procedures, and assessing progress to ensure continuous alignment with labor market needs. These measures contribute to a dynamic educational cooperation that supports long-term employability and economic growth. The research provides a conceptual model that outlines four interconnected elements for aligning academic programs with employer needs.

This study contributes to the growing discourse on sustainable HEI–industry collaboration by providing actionable insights into how QA processes can operationalize this alignment. The findings are particularly relevant for HEIs seeking to enhance curriculum responsiveness and strengthen graduate readiness in the face of accelerating labor market transformations.
