Abstract:
English has been increasingly used in different academic contexts across the globe, and it is the third most widely spoken language in the world. English as a Medium of Instructions (EMI) is based on teaching and learning certain content or academic subjects in English in situations in which there is a different official language.
This study analyses teacher and students' challenges and adaptation strategies in different programs in higher education in a private university in Puebla, Mexico. A workshop called Teach your subject in English was developed to provide faculty with the required tools or strategies in order to train a group of specialists to teach in English. Additionally, evaluations were done to identify professors who were highly proficient in the language and had shown special interest in international experiences. EMI was used as a methodology to increase the number of courses taught in English, to improve the students' language proficiency, develop intercultural skills, and as a way to attract more international students.
By offering selected courses in English, students have been receiving more exposure and more opportunities to use the language, while professors have benefited from obtaining essential linguistic and pedagogical tools that are valued in the classroom.
The process of introducing EMI as a strategy towards a global campus and the results that have been obtained so far are described. Keywords:
