Abstract:
Auburn University will share the strategic planning, high-impact practice goals, development process, website and program content, and outcomes of an innovative strategy promoting global learning and the development of faculty global and technological competencies to adapt to the needs and demands of higher education in the 21st Century. For development of faculty technological capabilities, the creation of an Innovation and Research Commons gives access to and training for use of sophisticated visualization, virtual/augmented reality, audio, and haptic hardware and software to enhance teaching and learning, especially in a global context. Additionally, with the creation of a Global Teaching Academy, and an Internationalizing Teaching and the Curriculum faculty showcase website, a strategic initiative to promote internationalization in the 21st century culminates in the biennial International Perspectives on University Teaching and Learning Symposium (conducted in 2018 and 2021 and planned again for 2023). The IPUTL Symposium is a three-day international meeting exploring new and innovative avenues of global teaching and learning informed by theory, research, and practice, as well as current and future trends impacting international undergraduate and graduate education. The symposium creates a unique micro-community of faculty, graduate students, and administrators from diverse cultural, national, and academic backgrounds to discuss global issues affecting teaching and learning in the academy. Together with the technologies of the Commons, the symposium and associated faculty development opportunities represent a comprehensive approach to supporting and developing all members of the academic community to expand their knowledge of pressing issues of global higher education including sustainability, access, quality, and impact.
