Abstract:
Higher education is experiencing the convergence of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and persistent virtual worlds, creating a need for coherent integration rather than fragmented pilot initiatives. The Augmented Intelligent Reality and Virtual Worlds (AIR-VW) framework addresses this challenge by positioning emerging technologies as a unified ecosystem that enhances human capability, professional judgement, and sustained innovation in teaching and learning.
AIR-VW builds on more than two decades of immersive education research led by Professor Sue Gregory, whose work has advanced virtual professional experience, immersive role-play, machinima, and persistent virtual learning environments. This sustained body of scholarship demonstrates that virtual worlds operate as authentic, low-risk spaces where learners rehearse complex scenarios, develop confidence, and engage in reflective decision-making before entering real professional contexts. Collectively, these findings reposition immersive environments from experimental tools to evidence-informed educational platforms that effectively bridge theory and practice, highlighting their practical relevance for professional learning design and contemporary higher education innovation.
The framework integrates AI as adaptive augmentation within these environments. Rather than replacing educators, AI provides reflective support, adaptive feedback, and personalised pathways while maintaining human oversight. Intelligent non-player characters simulate realistic interactions, while coordinated AI agents deliver observation, contextual intervention, and adaptive cycles, creating responsive learning ecologies with reusable scenarios that can be directly embedded within curriculum practice.
Development employs design-based research through iterative co-design, real-world implementation, mixed-methods evaluation, and institutional scaling. This ensures ecological validity while generating transferable principles that can inform adoption across disciplines and institutional contexts.
A cornerstone commitment is ethical, inclusive, human-centred innovation. Transparent AI governance, auditable processes, and culturally responsive design preserve professional agency. Low-bandwidth accessibility and flexible participation pathways further demonstrate how immersive learning environments can enhance equity and access for regional and remote learners, reflecting a challenge shared across global higher education systems.
This integration signals movement from isolated experimentation toward sustainable institutional capability. Expected outcomes include deeper learner engagement, improved professional readiness, and scalable authentic rehearsal opportunities. The AIR-VW framework offers institutions a practical and ethical model for coherent technology integration. By synthesising immersive learning scholarship with advances in agentic AI, this work positions intelligent immersive environments as enduring educational infrastructure that extends professional expertise, enriches learning design, and supports future-ready learning cultures. Keywords:
