Abstract:
Bharathanatyam is an ancient Indian dance form. The classical dance form is revered globally and has an ardent following of learners, graduates and patrons. A study in Bharathanatyam covers a rigorous curriculum over a significant period. Learners require commitment, perseverence and diligence to master the intricate combination of dance, prose and mime.

There is an aspiration among the Indian diaspora in South Africa to master the art form. The dance is revered among younger and older people who take different experiences and meaning from the dance either as proponent, performer or observer of the dance.

This qualitative study uses a focus group method to explore the link between Bharathanatyam, culture and identity among adolescent learners within the South African context. The study is located in Malabar, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The findings of the study indicate a strong correlation between the study of Bharathanatyam in relation to culture and identity among a minority group.
