Abstract:
Educational reforms are calling upon teachers to creative healthy and conducive environment for all learners. As well as imparting knowledge, teaching is also concerned with developing skills and strategies for future learning. However, teachers may not be adequately trained to use appropriate teaching strategies with slow learners. This study looks at teaching strategies used by secondary school teachers. The participants of this study were 36 secondary school teachers currently enrolled in a post graduate teacher education course. The teachers were from both public and private institutions. Data for this study was obtained through questionnaires and interviews. Qualitative data analysis methods were used to analyse the data. The results suggest that teachers use a number of strategies such as feedback, language level, engaging in extra-curricular activities and use simple vocabulary in directions and instructions. However, the result shows that teachers do not meet parents to understand the reason why students may not be performing well in the classroom. Finally the result show that the main way that teachers used to identifying slow learners was classroom observation.
