Abstract:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Qingdao Declaration promotes use of information and communication Technology (ICT) to achieve education targets in new sustainable development goals. Given that Mauritius is embarking in a major change in its schooling system with the advent of ICT as one of the subject in the proposed curriculum, determining the current state of available computer facilities and the nature of work of teaching and technical staff is important to inform training and development of resources. This paper examines the current state of ICT-based facilities in Mauritian schools.

Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires and analysed. The fifty eight participants were ICT support staff from primary schools. The data obtained was analysed with a qualitative data analysis tool.

The research shows that the ICT facilities available in schools need attention. Internet access is slow and maintenance a problem. However ICT support staff have found ways to cope and give support.
