Abstract:
In Mexico, when students finish the Medium Level, which is the one before the Superior Level, look for Superior Educational Institutions where they can perform their professional studies. Public universities are the most requested for thousands of students who apply for a place in order to be accepted.
Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana is one of the most asked institutions in Mexico, every entrance process, thousands of candidates look for a place, UAM is also recognized as one of the best universities in Mexico, however, sometimes different situations have an impact in its performance.
One of these situations can be a strike, in 2019, UAM experienced the longest strike of its history, about 93 days, which in terms of the scholar calendar, represents a complete scholar period (12 weeks, almost three months). Academic activities stopped and continued after the strike finished.
One of the activities interrupted was an entrance process. In the social media, a lot of comments about the university were posted, many mentioned that the prestige of UAM could be affected because of this situation and the amount of students that would look for entering it could be reduced, also, the amount of students that have recently entered could leave it and looking for other options.
This work presents a statistical analysis of the amount of students that entered UAM after the strike comparing this amount of students with the storical data. For this, the two years before the strike, the year of the strike and a year after this one were considered.
Results will show if a strike could affect the perception of students that look for entering UAM and the effect on those who have been in a short time in the institution. Sometimes the impact on the students and the effect on the prestige of the institution are not considered at the moment of deciding if a strike begins or not, knowing the effect that this type of movements could have would help in a more conscious decision.
For this work, is analyzed the behavior of engineering students in campus UAM Azcapotzalco (UAM-A) which have as maximum 4 scholar periods in the university. Also the amount of new students that entered UAM after the strike finished. Results are presented using different information visualization techniques. Keywords:
