Abstract:
The seagoing expedition about the Spanish Economic Exclusive Zone (ZEEE) takes place all the years onboard BIO (Oceanographic Research Vessel) Hespérides (A-33) where scientifics from the Spanish Navy Observatory (in charge of studies about magnetic and gravimetry fields), the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy (in charge of carrying out bathymetric studies), the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (as collaborating and support institutions for the campaign), and as undergraduate (BSc on Geology and BSc on Marine and Environmental Sciences) as graduate students (MSc on Geological Risks, MSc on Oceanography) from several Spanish universities such as University Complutense of Madrid or University of Cadiz. Students are accompanied by a tutor of each institution and they share a month of work and communal living on board the vessel. During this time, the oceanographic campaign participants are integrated in different work shifts, are taught by scientists of the different institutions about how an oceanographic research of these characteristics is carried out. Moreover, they are encouraging to work in all the studies (geological, geophysical, oceanography) that are carrying out onboard. Besides along the cruise, the scientific personal, the military staff, are teaching different courses to the students. In addition, at the end of the seagoing expedition is required a specific inform redacted by the students which supplements the inform written by the other institutions. Finally, this seagoing expedition that is dedicated to teach and train new oceanographers is an exceptional occasion where the ocean serves as a floating lab for the students.
