Abstract:
The objective was to "Diagnose the educational relevance of a Master's Program in Administration in Educational Management and Development", to identify its strengths and limitations. The term relevance means opportunity to do something, at the right time and space. That is, "a program is coherent in relation to a context and the demanding needs of society" (Angeles, Silva and Aquino, 2017). To demonstrate the coherence of the program, the social needs and the regulations of the organizations that guide the development of science and technology, and the new guidelines for postgraduate programs established in the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) were considered.
The objective of the master's degree is to "professionalize managers and project leaders of educational institutions and systems, through the development of strategic management competencies through academic interaction and collaborative work, in high-performance interdisciplinary teams, all in the framework of the knowledge society", the basic aspects for its achievement, are the training in management, and leadership, which is considered the second factor that influences the performance of organizations and school improvement (Glatthorn et al., 2016). , due to its influence by incorporating various practices in the development of management actions such as the promotion of the mission and vision, organizational change management (Steinberg, 2014).
The deductive methodology was ex post facto and comparative with data from various educational institutions of higher education, a quantitative analysis and reflective analysis of the comparison of the orientations, objectives, and scope of the study plans in the field of education was made, but the programs in administration and management of education at the national level were specifically analyzed. The population of graduate programs amounts to 12,315 graduate programs. Only 8.28% integrate doctoral, master's and specialty programs in education at the national level. The programs in administration and educational management in relation to the total programs in education is 14.81%.
Among the results, the difference in content and training was found between the master's programs in administration and management of educational institutions. The field of opportunity for the expansion of coverage was determined and the relevance of the program with social needs was reaffirmed, the coherence between the elements that make up the curricular structure of the program was also reaffirmed.
As part of the conclusions, the strengths of the program are in its contents, distribution, and delimitation according to its lines of research. Also, in the solidity of the training of its teachers. Low competition from other institutions due to the existence of 149 programs with similar characteristics but distributed throughout Mexico, which creates opportunities to expand coverage. Its general lines of research, as well as its objectives, are aligned with the National Development Plan, and with the strategic national problems raised by CONACYT and with the management training needs in educational institutions at various levels: basic, upper secondary, and higher education.
