Abstract:
Burnout was officially declared a syndrome by the World Health Organization in 2019. After the recent COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, one of the most serious problems with university students is that they suffer this condition. They feel indifferent and stressed because they consider that homework, teachers, subjects, and other factors negatively influence them. This research focus on academic burnout, specifically on students of the Degree in Civil Engineering in a public University in Tabasco, Mexico. The research was limited to a sample group of 50 male and female students aged between 18 and 24 years old. The investigation was carried out in one semester of study from February to June 2023 with students of 10 different semesters. The methodology carried out was nonexperimental cross sectional with a mixed approach as well as field and documentary research. It was developed with a quantitative orientation. The data collection technique was the application of a survey developed using Likert scale with five levels of response: ranging from totally disagree, disagree, neither disagree, nor agree, agree and totally agree. There was a qualitative orientation based on person-to-person oral history as well, where students freely gave their opinions about being university students after the pandemic. This data was also considered after students answered their surveys. The results show that the most important factors that affect the optimum behaviour of the civil engineering students are physical and mental fatigue, difficult subjects, difficulties in private lives, lack of time and self-discouragement.
