Abstract:
Currently, the internationalization of higher education is considered one of the most important aspects for those institutions that wish to be part of an international community. Although the process of internationalization is necessary in all institutions, it depends on the characteristics of each institution and must be consistent with the educational mission, financial and physical resources, scientific potential, the number of students and other key components in planning strategic development of the educational institution. Therefore, this research seeks to examine the structure of knowledge in the conceptualization of internationalization through the identification and comparison of strategies, plans and activities that have been investigated in the field of internationalization of curricula, methods of teaching and learning in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Based on Scopus and Web of Science databases, a bibliometric analysis was performed on 245 publications using Thomson Data Analyzer (TDA) and Tree of Science (ToS) softwares. Subsequently, the results were filtered according to quality and applicability criteria, as a result 30 documents were selected for the conceptual analysis. Based on this analysis, the term Internationalization was systematically categorized with the academic sources that have contributed to the evolution of this field of research. Among the results, it is observed that the concept of internationalization involves macro, meso and microcurricular aspects as well as intercultural, international and global dimensions of the functions of teaching, research and extension in higher education. Finally, new fields of research in the area of of ​​internationalization are requiered in order to integrate the identified aspects.
