Abstract:
Gender equality in education remains a critical global concern, as disparities persist in access, retention, and achievement between genders. This paper examines the multifaceted dimensions of gender disparities in educational settings, exploring the complexities of societal norms, and individual experiences that shape educational opportunities and outcomes. This paper begins by explaining the historical context of gender and education, tracing the evolution of gender roles and educational policies that have both strengthened and challenged traditional gender norms. It highlights the importance of recognising intersectionality, acknowledging how factors such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location intersect with gender to produce differential educational experiences and outcomes. Furthermore, this article delves into the systemic barriers that perpetuate gender inequalities in education, including gender bias in curricula, teaching practices, and assessment methods. It discusses the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields and leadership positions, as well as the prevalence of gender-based violence and discrimination in educational settings, which hinder girls' and women's access to quality education and impede their academic success. Moreover, the paper explores promising interventions and strategies aimed at promoting gender equality in education. It highlights the importance of inclusive and gender-responsive pedagogies that challenge stereotypes, foster critical thinking, and empower learners of all genders. It also examines the role of policy frameworks and advocacy efforts in promoting gender-sensitive educational environments and ensuring equal opportunities for all. The paper concludes by emphasizing the urgent need for concerted action at the individual, institutional, and societal levels to dismantle gender inequalities in education. Ultimately, achieving gender equality in education is not only a fundamental human right but also a prerequisite for building inclusive and sustainable societies.
