Abstract:
Concurrent engineering, which emerged at the end of the last century, evolves in this century towards collaborative engineering, which has gone from being an alternative in the organization of production systems to being a real necessity.

Remote work and globalization, caused by the increasingly necessary integration of development teams located hundreds or thousands of kilometers away, has made it necessary to implement collaborative engineering in industry a few years ago. Nevertheless, in the recently experienced pandemic situation worldwide, these tools have been a survival lifeline for many companies.

In this communication, a review is made of how collaborative engineering has evolved, from its beginnings from concurrent engineering to the current situation. The alternatives available today are considered, both in open environments and in specific professional environments, indicating the shortcomings that still exist in this kind of solutions.

After this analysis, which is developed under the eye point of its usability in academic environment, it is proposed how these methodologies should operate in a more or less near future in the idea of proposing an operational and friendly tool rather useful in academic field.
