Abstract:

The recent rise of death tolls due to the novel Coronavirus (Covid -19) had as a result its declaration as pandemic. In its turn, this led to the closing of educational institutes (including schools, kindergartens and universities) around the world, in an attempt to contain the virus. At the same time, this put a strain on educational institutions that face the dilemma to either lose the year or to try real time their e-learning infrastructure in the most typical case of emergency remote teaching.

This paper will examine the case of Greece in particular from the closing of schools from March 9th till the end of April (2020). According to UNESCO, more than 2.2 million of learners in Greece have been affected by this situation. UNESCO is sharing in its website 10 recommendations for planning distance learning solutions. In our research we will check out the extent that Greece utilized the aforementioned suggestions.

The main research from the paper will be the data that we will receive by creating a daily calendar with the actions taken from Greek Government institutions in order to adopt e-learning and continue their course. At the same time we will check any cases that make the news in popular news websites and channels in Greece. Our goal is to examine the level of adoption of e-learning solutions, the ways they were adopted and their efficacy. By the end of our research we will be able to know if e-Learning can easily replace traditional classroom learning in cases of crises and what lessons we learnt for future implementations.
