Abstract:
With the widespread use of modern computer technologies, the need for improving the education process is clear, so that students get acquainted with modern technologies and get the ability to use their full potential.

This paper presents an instrument that will be used in exercises for automating the design process of the vibrating bunker loading device, in the course of Design of Automated Equipment which is a mandatory part of the Mechanical Engineering curriculum. Using this teaching method makes it easier for students to focus on the essence of the design process and solving related problems rather than focusing on complex calculations and strict following of their sequence.

The used methodology has been validated over the years and is the current methodology used in this course. All necessary equations and relations are entered in the calculation table in MS Excel. Using Visual Basic programming, the process of selecting the standard mechanical parts and calculations of the required construction dimensions of the device, are fully automated.

The developed instrument also includes a parametric 3D CAD model that allows the importing of the calculated results and generates the final version of the device 3D CAD model as well as the CAD drawings for all necessary parts.

The use of the presented instrument at the learning process makes students to focus easier on specific stages at the design of vibrating bunker loading device. This tool also allows demonstrating how the designed device changes, after changing of input data.

Applying this method in the course of Design of Automated Equipment is very useful to students in terms of demonstrating how a complex methodology for multiple parameters calculations can be automated. The described task is realized by using Visual Basic programming, included in the MS Office package. The students’ knowledge and skills to automate engineering calculations can be improved and implemented in many different directions in their education and consequence in their work as engineers.
