Abstract:
Since their introduction in the scientific literature in 2008, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have massively expanded with a diverse use in interdisciplinary topics, addressed to various targets groups, environments and settings. MOOCs have transformed education by offering free, accessible and flexible learning opportunities to everyone interested and having the technological means to participate. These web-based courses are designed for large-scale participation, providing a diverse range of subjects from various institutions. The DAISSy Research Group of Hellenic Open University (HOU) has been instrumental in developing and implementing MOOCs that address contemporary educational needs across multiple interdisciplinary topics. Addressing in general Competence Development, including Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) relevant Competence Development, DAISSy-HOU has designed MOOCs tailored for participants interested to improve their knowledge. These courses aim to enhance digital, green and transversal skills among diverse professionals and everyone interested in each dedicated theme, and comprise multiple modules covering topics such as, managing diversity, (gender) equality, digital inclusion and digital citizenship. In each Course, participants can engage with, a blend of core modules, practical applications, case studies, live webinars featuring experts in the field and self-assessment quizzes. Interactive forums facilitate peer interaction, while supplementary materials support deeper learning. Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion and open badges acknowledging their achievements, contributing to their professional development in today's evolving digital landscape. Through these initiatives, the DAISSy Research Group demonstrates a commitment to, leveraging MOOCs as effective tools for lifelong learning, enhancing professional development, the promotion of critical competencies in various fields, and overall towards an inclusive society. In this paper, these MOOCs, together with the experience gained from putting them in practice, are presented.
