Abstract:
The aim of the article is to present the concept of digital filmmaking in the preparatory training of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear first responders (CBRN FR). The authors state that the performed by students scenarios in a 3D environment can be recorded and then used as short instructional videos. The digital videos can be prepared by students in two steps. The first step, Live Actions in Virtual Reality, is to perform scenarios, such as leaving the vehicle with an improvised explosive device or a source of ionizing radiation. Students learn how to operate safely in hazardous environment. The second step, Creating a Video, relies on recording an instructional material with the use of special software (commercial or noncommercial). In this phase students rework the scenarios and, as a result, memorize them better. Authors suggest that this two-step virtual activity is applicable to preparatory training of first responders as it aims at increasing their awareness of CBRN threat and hazards including potential effects of unexpected incidents. It must be noted that applied scenarios may involve lessons learned from real incidents; therefore, the resultant user-generated content can be adapted for educational programs and distributed among military trainers. Regarding practical implications of such training, responding CBRN incidents in a virtual environment reduces training costs, integrates international communities, and provides painless learning on mistakes.
