Abstract:
In recent years, in the framework of Women's Studies, it has been shown that the already gender cultural gap, which has been created by the family, has been transferred to a privileged place enabling its strengthening and investigation with ways and methods similar to those of the family: the place of school. The institution of the school constitutes the major transmission channel of images, stereotypes and values (always along with family, but also with the media). Factors such as policies related to education in general, the content of the curriculum in conjunction with the content of textbooks and their iconography, the famous "hidden" curriculum, games, attitudes, expectations, attitudes of teachers, speech of teachers, interventions in the social environment of the school, contribute decisively to the preservation of traditional roles and behaviors and to their "internalization" by the students. Therefore it becomes obvious why the request for an anti-sexist childrearing and for a modern feminist pedagogy has been set.
With the relevant identified needs, an attempt was made in the framework of the broader educational reform in Cyprus to evaluate the curricula in the three levels of education from a gender perspective, a venture which constituted an extremely interesting educational effort. Beyond the evaluation, the programs were enriched with the gender perspective through specific disagreements which were accompanied by corresponding corrective/additional proposals and the marking of omission and inclusion of sectors and themes related to gender. For the validity of the evaluation specific criteria were established, always from the perspective of gender. Our intention is to present at your conference the content and method of work of the scientific team which sought to carry out this project.
