FROM GUIDANCE TO CONFIDENCE: PERCEIVED SELF-EFFICACY OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS USING “NABEEH,” A CUSTOM GPT AS A SELF-LEARNING ASSISTANT

Abstract:
Self-efficacy is a crucial factor influencing students’ academic success. Emerging technologies may play a significant role in enhancing learners’ self-efficacy. This study aimed to explore university students' perceived self-efficacy when using “Nabeeh,” a custom GPT-based self-learning assistant in a programming class for student teachers. A descriptive design was employed, with 55 college of education students in computer programming language class used Nabeeh for one semester then they completed a brief questionnaire that had closed and open-ended questions. In addition, a short interview was conducted with one of the instructors of the class. Quantitative results indicated positive self-efficacy perceptions across all items with an overall mean of 3.64 (SD = 0.84). The qualitative findings reveal that Nabeeh improved students’ self-efficacy by boosting their confidence, autonomy, and understanding of programming language. They described it as a fast, easy, and reliable tool that supported independent learning, reduced effort and anxiety, and enhanced their motivation and belief in their academic abilities. The instructor supported the findings as indicating that Nabeeh generally enhanced students’ self-efficacy. Based on findings, set of recommendations were provided.Keywords:
