Abstract:
Mathematics subjects in engineering degrees are considered as mandatory subjects in their study plans. Mathematics provide the student with a set of essential tools when facing their future as an engineer, not only with regard to drawing conclusions and developing different strategies, but also regarding the design of experiments. Thus, the correct comprehension of these knowledge, tools and competences are vital for the students as a previous step for later use in industrial activity.

Nowadays, many research and teaching innovations focus on changing the role of the student in the lecture room from a passive role (students who just listen to the professor, take notes and do tasks) to an active one (students involved in their learning who question and reflect on explanations, and carry out their own research).

Active roles improve the consolidation of the contents, as well as the skills of learning to learn, initiative and personal autonomy, information analysis, communication, argumentation, and so on.

In the present project, we managed to get an active role of all the students involved. The project has been developed in the School of Engineering of the University of Cadiz, and involves students of the Mathematics subjects in Aerospace Engineering Degree, Industrial Technologies Engineering Degree and Industrial Engineering Master.

The purpose of the project is to carry out, in groups, a scientific study of a mathematical model described by ordinary or partial differential equations. Each group chooses the topic and looks for a model in papers published in reputable scientific journals. Once the study is done, the group shows the results in a scientific poster and gives an oral presentation.

Hence, we will show the results obtained in the project that improves, among others, the motivation, the summarization of contents, the student's oral communication, and definitively, improves the active role of them.
