PAPERLESS CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION USING EES MODELLING AND A VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Abstract:
The digital transformation of higher education is reshaping teaching, learning, and assessment processes in engineering programs. This paper presents the implementation of a paperless continuous assessment model in a Fluid Mechanics course within an undergraduate engineering degree. The proposed approach integrates numerical modelling software and a virtual learning environment to support competency-based learning while eliminating traditional paper-based evaluation.
The methodology combines the use of Engineering Equation Solver (EES) as a computational tool for solving engineering problems and modelling fluid-mechanics systems with the institutional learning management system UBUVirtual for distributing materials, managing submissions, conducting online assessments, and providing feedback. Continuous assessment activities include online theoretical quizzes, collaborative and individual problem-solving assignments using EES, laboratory reports submitted in digital format, and recorded video presentations of experimental work.
The evaluation structure distributes assessment across theoretical knowledge tests, practical problem-solving activities, and laboratory-based assignments, ensuring progressive acquisition of disciplinary and transversal competencies. The virtual platform enables students to access learning materials in advance, supports flipped-learning dynamics, and facilitates autonomous and collaborative work. All deliverables are submitted electronically, ensuring traceability of student performance and eliminating paper usage.
The implementation of this digital assessment model improves feedback efficiency, promotes student engagement, and contributes to sustainability objectives by reducing paper consumption. Results from the teaching experience suggest that integrating simulation tools with virtual learning environments provides an effective framework for continuous assessment in engineering education aligned with digitalization and sustainable teaching practices.Keywords:
