Abstract:
This research study investigates the perception of the Sustainability Thinking competency in Maritime Education and Training. Based on the findings of the critical analysis of existing literature, there is a lack of research exploring the current state of sustainability competencies in maritime education, a fundamental gap addressed in the present research. A questionnaire was conducted in two maritime courses at one International Maritime Collage to evaluate students' perspectives on sustainability thinking knowledge, abilities, skills, and values through a self-assessment instrument. The study was conducted among 88 students- 27 women and 61 men - from five different nationalities, enrolled in two distinct courses: Maritime Law course- with 42 students and Ship Stability-II.

The research method was based on two main aspects to evaluate:
i) Sustainability Thinking sub-competencies and their observable characteristics criteria and
ii) Future Generations Impact: students' perspectives on the future influence of the course on their positions, considering sustainability trends and factors in the maritime industry.

In summary, this research highlights the necessity for continuous improvement, emphasising the need for further research, practices, and tools to promote the development and assessment of Sustainability thinking sub-competencies among students pursuing careers in the maritime industry. While younger generations possess a greater understanding of global sustainability concerns, educators must continue advancing in creating and implementing active learning methodologies, challenge-based learning, critical thinking, ethics, sustainability, and Society 5.0 skills. This study contributes to academia and stakeholders' understanding of students' awareness and involvement in addressing sustainability concerns within the maritime industry, particularly in education. The outcomes will provide educators, policymakers, and stakeholders with significant knowledge regarding the impact of current approaches and possibilities for improvement, fostering a more sustainable maritime education and workforce.
