Abstract:
The project „IT Academy – education for the 21st century is being dealt with at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at UPJŠ in Košice. The strategic aim of this project is to create a model of education and preparation of young people for the actual and perspective needs of the society and work market aiming at the Informatics and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

A model of informatics classes has been designed within this project. For this purpose we have created a subject of Informatics in Natural Sciences and Mathematics (composed of the modules of Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Physics and Biology) that widens and deepens the students´ knowledge from Informatics. In the article, we inform the part Informatics in Natural Sciences – the module of Chemistry, which follows the thematic units from informatics aiming at the modeling and databases in Chemistry.

In the individual materials students can acquaint themselves with various ways in which molecular structures can be represented, gain notions of bond lengths and angles, they will learn how to work with databases of formulas of organic compounds, amino acids, vitamins, carbohydrates, DNA/RNA bases etc. The list of materials aimed at the Chemistry Education Databases consists of the Database of Laboratory Protocols, the Acid Rain Monitoring and the Periodicity in Properties of Elements.

The subject also strengthens the preparation for school-leaving exams from chemistry as the methodologies tie knowledge of more thematic units of high school curriculum.

This research was supported by the KEGA No. 004UPJŠ-4/2020 “Creation, Implementation, and Verification of the Effectiveness of Digital Library with the Formative Assessment Tools for the Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Informatics at the Elementary School” and VEGA No. 1/0265/17 “Formative Assessment in Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Informatics” grants.
