Abstract:
Managerial competencies are a specific type of individual competencies which have been defined as a set of motivations, personal traits, abilities, knowledge and values necessary to improve management performance (Boyatzis, 2008).

21st Century Organizations need to be led with specific competencies due to the changing and complex world in which they are developing. So, identifying managerial competencies becomes a valuable source for achieving competitive advantages (Königová & Hron, 2012).

The aim of this paper is to carry out a concise “state of the art” review of the managerial competencies research domain, in particular, how scholars approached this field of study, what aspects of managerial competencies were studied, which areas and sectors were chosen and in which countries researchers developed their studies, how those studies were designed, which methodologies were used, which target population was chosen to do the research, how many individuals took part in the process to obtain data and what conclusions were reached.

With an iterative search in multiple literature databases such as Web of Science or Scopus, qualified research studies were identified. Those studies were examined, analyzed and categorized according to different categories: bibliographical data, methodologies used, empirical foundation, conceptual frameworks, selected items and reported outcomes.

Currently, the study of Managerial competencies is emerging as an internationally recognized research domain, because a new generation are joining the workforce, so new managers from Generation Y, the largest generation in the world, (Davies et al., 2014) are now leading organizations and are responsible for five generations.

The main contribution of this paper is a contemporary and comprehensive overview of this field as such and a methodological contribution to run a multi-variate analysis of the different aspects related to managerial competencies in relation to the output and performance data reported in the studies. Another contribution is the identification of cross-disciplinary research perspectives in the field today.
