Abstract:
AI has been an active topic of research for more than 50 years (Holmes, 2020) Some of the most typical AI applications in education involve knowledge representation, intelligent tutoring, natural language processing, autonomous agents etc… (Wu et al. 2006) The benefits of AI techniques have been gradually used to improve the life of those people with special needs (Hopcan et al., 2023). For example, AI has helped address computer-based speech therapy (Schipor et al. 2010), self-assessment through a neural network (Pavlopoulos et al. 2008), second-language learning (Drigas, 2008), early intervention for children with Autism (Rapin & Tuchman, 2008), emotional recognition instruction (Sebe et al. 2006), social skills instruction (Riedl et al. 2007) and with the diagnostics for Learning Disabilities identification (Hernandez, et al. 2009). AI techniques have also been identified as one of the most potentially valuable applications in the field of special education (Sharma et al. 2023). Integrating and using AI can make lesson planning simple and quick; platforms such as ChatGPT or LUDIA can be used to generate a lesson plan in seconds based off of a standard entered. Additionally, the AI platforms can help identify barriers for students' specific disabilities, and then help the teacher create alternative paths to maximize inclusion and academic success. Essentially, lesson plan writing and its components constitute a set of technical skills. These skills include outlining learning objectives, designing activities, preparing materials, and structuring assessments. While mastering these technical aspects is crucial, the ability to deliver the lesson and interact effectively with children is equally if not more important, and falls under the domain of interaction skills. Interaction skills are critical as they facilitate classroom engagement, managing student behavior, and ensuring that students grasp the content being taught. Effective interaction skills help create a positive learning environment where students are motivated to participate and learn, ultimately leading to better educational outcomes. Therefore, leveraging AI for the technical aspects, time will be saved which can ultimately be used to focus on enhancing student interaction.
This presentation will focus on initial findings from preservice special education teachers regarding their experiences learning to use AI technologies to support students with disabilities through:
1) effective lesson plan development,
2) implementation of evidence-based practices, and
3) improving their interactions with students.Keywords:
