Abstract:
The Spanish RD 822/2021 establishes the organization of university education. According to Article 4, study plans must be based on democratic principles and values, incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and addressing sustainability and climate change. Compliance with RD 822/2021 represents a change in the approach to teaching. Universities, including the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), must adapt to this new legal and regulatory framework. Simultaneously, they should seize this opportunity to propose, design, implement, and evaluate innovative teaching strategies related to the SDGs.
In the UPV, the Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering (DIQN) and the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research and Quality (DEIOAC) have worked together to identify weaknesses, threats, strengths, and opportunities in subjects across different bachelor’s degrees at the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) developing contents and activities related to SDGs. In this frame, the design of activities must consider the vertical coordination between subjects. This coordination can be challenging mainly due to the possible time gap between subjects. However, this apparent weakness can also be an opportunity. Connecting concepts and applications between a first-year course with a fourth-year course can be very motivating for students, as they will work with a wide range of technological applications from the first day of the degree, significantly improving their perception of the connection between course content and practical applications within the degree. Additionally, the fourth-year students acquire capabilities to select and apply the most appropriate statistical technique or tool to solve a specific energy problem.
This work is devoted to expose the activities developed in two different subjects of the bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering (GITI), “Statistics” and “Energy Technology”, to enhance and improve the coordination between them using the SDGs as guiding thread. For this goal, different activities are designed for the students of both subjects to promote synergies between contents, propose problems and activities. Keywords:
