Abstract:
The paper deals with a communicative approach to teaching grammar and thus helping students to use the language they are learning more efficiently. The methods applied to achieve the solution of the research problem are analysis of literature and experiments performed in classes of English with the students of the second year of studies at the Kazan Federal University.

Improving speaking skills through communicative grammar is a dynamic approach concentrating on the practical application of language rules in real-life communication. Unlike traditional grammar instruction that often focuses on learning the rules and then practicing them in a number of traditional exercises, communicative grammar places a strong emphasis on meaningful interaction and the ability to convey ideas in various contexts. Communicative grammar is about integrating grammar instruction into practical speaking exercises. Instead of doing controlled exercises, learners are exposed to grammatical structures in the context of meaningful communication.

Communicative grammar involves a lot of interaction among students. This can include pair work, group discussions and language games. The goal is to provide opportunities for students to use grammar structures in a supportive and communicative environment. According to the curriculum, the 2nd year students study Reported speech, Subjunctive mood, Modal verbs and Non-finite forms of the verb, the grammar material that is used in everyday speech. When lessons involve situations that students might encounter in real life, the process of using appropriate grammar structures becomes natural and spontaneous. It must be noted that the students involved into the experiment were able to use grammar structures to achieve specific communicative goals easily at the end of the first term. As a certain degree of error is possible in students’ speech when teaching grammar in a communicative way, they felt free to express their thoughts and feelings doing certain tasks. The results of the final test showed that 83% of all students involved into the experiment coped with all tasks with A and B grades.

The paper might be of interest for schoolteachers and University lectures interested in varying methods in teaching English and setting more convenient atmosphere for student to communicate and interact.
