Abstract:
The Architecture Degree allow students to learn the appropriate competences necessary to calculate the technical building code requirements. In this area, the method of teaching this subject has been replaced. Years ago, we used to teach conventional lessons, but now we have decided to adapt to the participative method of project-based learning, that is, something way more interactive where the student can actively participate in.
This innovation focuses on teaching basic competence in technical building code requirements, including: building code requirements identification, analytical details solution, computer design and determine the right solutions for technical requirements.
This project-based learning method follows this pattern:
(a) choice of project by each group of students,
(b) technical building code requirements identification,
(c) building composition materials choice
(d) previous design of construction details,
(e) technical building code analytical justification,
(f) technical building code computer justification
(g) comparison of analytical and computer design results and conclusions.
This method ensures that the dynamics of the learning process is as similar as possible to the professional activity itself, and means that students develop the skills needed for the design of a construction project.
We have now found that assimilating new concepts and acquiring abilities have proved to be superior to the previous traditional learning method. At the same time, others sub-competences are also assimilated by these students while including the capacity for teamwork and interdisciplinary communication. These advantages are reflected in successful academic results, since the marks in this area of the subject have increased up to 10%, as well as the academic interviews to the students, which have remarkably improved. Keywords:
