Abstract:
Visiting other design programs enriches both creative practice and academic inquiry. It promotes an open exchange of ideas that supports continuous learning and professional growth while reinforcing design’s role as a dynamic, collaborative, and context-responsive field. Through such experiences, educators expand their horizons, contributing to a more connected and innovative design community.
I spent my professional development leave visiting three well-respected graphic design programs. After conducting an audit of BFA Graphic Design programs in the United States, I made my selection based on the following factors: program reputation, geographic location, and innovative curriculum strategies. At each institution, I observed classes, assisted with critiques, met in groups and individually with faculty and students and led calligraphy workshops. During these visits, I was exposed to diverse design philosophies, teaching methodologies, and studio cultures, which broadened my understanding of our discipline. From these visits I gained insights into different approaches to problem-solving, research methods, and other design processes, tools, and technologies. In addition, interaction with faculty and students fostered valuable networking opportunities, leading to future inter-university collaborative projects.
Observing how other institutions integrate research, teamwork, and digital applications into curricula was inspiring and enlightening. I plan to integrate some of these approaches into our curricula. These experiences enriched my cultural and contextual awareness, particularly when visiting programs with distinct social, geographic, religious, or aesthetic orientations. Exposure to diverse perspectives challenges assumptions and stereotypes as it enhances critical reflection and adaptability.
This presentation will highlight some of my observations from this wonderful opportunity. Keywords:
