Abstract:
Understanding the educational needs of university students and the trends that will characterize education in the coming years represents a complex challenge that must also be placed in a rapidly changing scenario (e.g., new technologies, the world of work, geopolitical and social dynamics) marked by epochal events that have had a significant impact (e.g., Covid-19). When we refer to education, we think not only of courses and training activities for students but also of what, for many of them, is the living context during their university studies, namely the halls of residence. Living in student accommodation such as campuses, dormitories, and halls of residence can be a crucial experience, contributing to students' growth and the development of their life and professional projects (Frascaroli, Pasolini, 2019; Frascaroli, Blanco, Gozzoli, 2015; Blimling, 2014).
The research presented in this paper emerged from the need to engage directly with university students to understand their perspective on future trends in education and living. To achieve this, students from Collegio di Milano in Milan were actively involved.
Collegio di Milano is an Italian hall of residence where students, enrolled in different universities in Milan, live and participate in cultural and training activities complementary to their university studies. The Collegio di Milano is managed by the Fondazione Collegio delle Università Milanesi and is recognized and accredited by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. It accommodates about 170 Italian and international students admitted through a selection process based on merit and motivation. Candidates must be enrolled in one of Milan's universities, with no restrictions on subjects or levels of university study. The Collegio di Milano aims to create a heterogeneous, stimulating, and formative environment, offering not only residential services but also high-level cultural and training activities (based on multidisciplinary approaches, internationalization, connections with the work world, and the development of soft skills and critical thinking), as well as mentorship and career services.
Approximately 150 university students residing at Collegio di Milano participated in a qualitative research study. Eight focus groups were conducted exploring three topics:
1) How young people have changed and are changing;
2) Education in 2050 (themes and methods);
3) Housing for university students in 2050 (trajectories and needs).
Remarkable results emerged. For example, regarding how young people have changed and are changing, participants emphasized increased fragility, greater competence in technology use with its pros and cons, and the risk of disorientation and difficulty in finding their own path. Regarding education in 2050, students consider relevant themes related to mental health and well-being, a technical and ethical approach to the use of technology, and multidisciplinary topics. In terms of training methods, they seek active modalities that leverage new technologies and align with their learning style (although they also value different approaches that can prepare them for the work world). Concerning dwelling in 2050, participants emphasized the importance of raising awareness and support for mental health and well-being, investing in common areas and activities that allow for interaction, discussion, and recreation. They do not consider technological innovation in housing as essential; it will be natural.Keywords:
