Abstract:
The author explores and describes the processes that embody the European Dimension of Education in the upper secondary education curriculum in Portugal. The research is undertaken using a multiple case study relying on the documentary analysis of the school educative projects and subject programmes focusing on the interpretation of Europe in school action with respect to the European Dimension of Education according to the recommendations of the Council of Europe. Regarding the curricula, the European Dimension of Education is viewed through the transversal aspect of education for citizenship. However, in the national programmes were Europe is revisited under the themes recommended by the European norm, it is concluded that the reference areas underlying the programme contents valorize themes such as the preservation of the cultural and geographic diversity of Europe, and the awareness of cultural diversity under the pilars of tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, peace and democracy.
