Abstract:
Flipgrid, now named Flip, is an online video discussion platform where students and teachers can create and share short videos on various topics. This tool has been used in education for language learning, social interaction, and reflection. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we adopted Flipgrid as a tool for English as Second Language (ESL) with secondary school students and analysed its educational potential (Fonseca, 2022). Our research validated Flipgrid as an educational tool for secondary school students, suitable for remote and hybrid teaching scenarios. We observed speaking skills enhancement (production and interaction), skill development, digital skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate online.
Bearing in mind the educational potential evidenced in using Flipgrid, we aim to update our theoretical framework, namely by further mapping the research about this tool. An exploratory search on Scopus, Mendeley and Google Scholar revealed that Flipgrid has been a research topic between 2019 and now, 2023, especially during the pandemic years. On the other hand, Google Scholar searches from 2021 onward suggest that Flipgrid has been searched in tandem with these topics: student engagement, social learning, video discussion, language learning, distance education, formative assessment, ESL, peer feedback, teaching speaking, and social-emotional learning.
In order to carry out the aforementioned mapping, we will use the Meta-Model of Analysis and Exploration of Scientific Knowledge® (MAECC®), sustained by quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches. Based on a corpus of open-access articles written in English, we will present the main findings regarding this tool, as well as its impacts on teachers and students, according to the literature review between 2021 and June 2023. Ultimately, we will expand the knowledge on Flip, mainly inspiring its adequate and impactful use in teaching scenarios. Keywords:
