Abstract:
The growth of penetration of the HbbTV (Hybrid Broadband Broadcast Television) standard in domestic environment and the upward demand of hybrid television are a recent phenomenon that requires a holistic analysis from the academy.
In this sense, while industry (content creators, manufacturers, chains, suppliers) strives to optimize the performance of this standard, University begins to realize the need to study the phenomenon in parallel, almost ahead of it. Traditionally, the academy has been criticized for going behind the business advances, or to delay too much its inclusion in the curricula of the Degrees and Postgraduate degrees involved.
With the aim of probing the opinion of university students about the HbbTV, its complexity, its potential applications and the most prone subjects to include possible contents, this research is carried out in order to respond, from University, to the new demands of society, in this case in the television experience and the Internet.
The study carried out follows a quantitative methodology, using the survey technique. To carry out the study we used a probabilistic sample. The population is constituted by Spanish university students, of whom a sample n = 121 has been obtained. 66% of the sample is women. The mean age is 21.8 years, with a standard deviation of 3.10.
In the questionnaire to be solved (through closed or multiple-choice questions), they were previously exposed that the HbbTV is a platform for broadcasting on-demand content that combines broadcasting and broadband services. It is a technological standard that unites TV and Internet in a single screen with the objective of promoting interactivity with the viewer. From that brief explanation, they were asked if they previously knew what the HbbTV was, if they used the HbbTV, the causes of use of the HbbTV (utility, information, comfort, snobbery, taste for Internet or others), the chains and the programs where HbbTV was used, frequency of use (daily, several times a week or several times a month) and supply expectations in the case of not using the HbbTV (special contents, possibility of dialogue with brands, immersion in Internet and others).
We also asked, on a Likert scale, the assessment of the theoretical usefulness of HbbTV, the theoretical technical complexity and the possible use of HbbTV in the academic environment. At this point, he asked about the needs of the HbbTV (more teacher preparation, more broadband, more modern TV equipment, larger screens or others), the subjects that should incorporate into their study plans some concept related to the HbbTV, the possible creation of a subject on interactivity centred on HbbTV, the theoretical use of HbbTV for a teacher and for a student, and the global assessment of HbbTV on a scale of 1 to 5. The survey was provided in the summer of 2018. Spearman nonparametric correlations are used methodologically, since the scales are reduced, ordinal or Likert type, or binary.
It is concluded that it is appropriate to introduce in the form of content in curricula, subjects or even new subjects a new and advanced technology that can penetrate the classroom and profoundly transform the relationship between students and teachers, as well as modify the dynamics in the classroom or in the seminars, more open and horizontal.
