Abstract:
In the current context of increasing environmental vulnerability and the growing impacts of climate change on agricultural regions in Mexico, a research study was conducted to analyze the scope of science communication strategies based on scientific theatre as a tool for environmental awareness. The study was carried out in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico, specifically in the Huamantla region, and was directed at fifth- and sixth-grade primary school students, with the aim of introducing them to local environmental issues and to the application of scientific knowledge within their own territory. The research is framed within scientific advances promoted by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, focused on monitoring soil moisture and climatic patterns through the use of satellite technology, microwave sensors, and physical–mathematical algorithms, with practical applications in agricultural production and food sovereignty.

The objective of the research was to evaluate the potential of scientific theatre as a didactic and communicative strategy to promote environmental awareness, stimulate interest in science, and enhance understanding of phenomena related to climate change and environmental impacts in school contexts. To this end, the methodology adopted a qualitative and participatory approach, based on playful educational interventions lasting approximately 50 minutes to one hour per group. Each session was structured into three integrated phases: the first encouraged collective reflection on climate change and its environmental effects through scenic dynamics and playful activities; the second involved a participatory demonstration of temperature measurement instruments used in agricultural fields; and the third presented the use of a small drone to illustrate how aerial images are obtained for monitoring crops and agricultural environments.

The results showed high levels of student participation, interest, and appropriation of the content, as well as an improved understanding of local environmental issues such as water body contamination and inadequate waste management. Additionally, a stronger articulation between the scientific content presented and school subjects was observed, contributing to meaningful learning processes.
